Dear friends

 

There are different types of looks. Some how any type of look is related to eye. A flowering plant or well maintained garden will give pleasing look. Whether it is in a film or in personal seeing Brindavan  Garden appears very beautiful. A big shop with items well arranged will give pleasing look.  Recently I had such an experience. I have gone to a big store many times. But I could not believe my eyes- recently it has systematically arranged making it  very beautiful and appealing.

 

Another look is about personality. Though personality is less still a well dressed person  can give pleasing look.  There is a saying – AALU PATHI, AADAI PATHI. Even a person will feel himself  smarter with better dress. Better dress can be new one or suited one or liked one.

 

This posting is  about Looks in  mythological and epic references came to my recollection.

1. Brahma and his three faces.

 

SATRUPA was an initial   female creation  by Brahma. Brahma himself got attracted to the enchanting beauty of Saturpa. Where ever she went, Brahma created a face to see her in that area. Seeing this uncontrolled nature, Lord  Shiva appeared and cut his forth face upwards . This made Brahma to control. Then onwards Brahma has three faces.  

 

2. Kamadeva dahanam.

 

All efforts to distract Lord Siva  from penance by Parvathi were  failing. Siva was on penance after SATI EPISODE during Daksha yaga. Indra deputed Kamadeva to create atmosphere  to distract Siva from penance and marry PARVATHI.

 

Siva felt the changed situation created. He opened his third eye and looked at Kamadeva. That is all – Kamadeva became ashes. How ever after pleading by Rati devi, wife of Kamadeva, he was given life, only Rati  could see him, all  others could only feel.

 

3. Sanjaya and Jnana drishti.

 

During great war, SANJAYA was given special sight , through which he could see the battle field and he could narrate  Dritharashtra about the war details.  I  recollect the lines studied long back

 

Dharma kshethrae Kurukshethrae

Samavetha yuyutsava

Mamaka Pandava schaiva.

Kim akurvatha sanjaya.   

Sanjaya Uvacha…..

 

4. Vedavyasa calling all Kouravas…

 

After the great war, Gandhari desired to VEDAVYASA  to show  her sons for some time who all had died in the war.  Vedavyasa one day evening took her to bank of Ganga. He called the Kouravas one by one. All of them appeared before Gandhari and then disappeared. This was thaposakthi of Vedavyasa.

 

5. Transfering the Thapobalam

 

Ever since she married Dritharashtra GANDHARI tied her eyes with cloth- If her husband is not having sight, she too did not want it.

 

At one time the thapobalam she acquired so , wanted to transfer to her elder son DURYODHANA. She asked him to come before her after bath one day with out any cloths. Her thinking was to transfer the force to his body through her look.

 

NARADA felt Duryodhana will get strength in his body and Pandavas could never defeat him. He advised Duryodhana though she is mother, he should wear cloths in the loin area. With out understanding the trick of Narada Duryodhana appeared before mother with a loin cloth. Gandhari opened her eyes. Alas. Loin area was covered. Hence she could give strength to all area except loin where there was covering. Duryodhana was killed blowing in Loin area.

 

6. Damayanthi recognising Nala.

 

 DAMAYANTHI was extremely beautiful. She had liked Nala. During Swayamvara, many devas appeared some  giving appearance similar to NALA. But Damayanthi recognised Nala, the human from his moving pupil in the  eyes. Pupils in the eyes of Deva’s will not move.

 

7. Ahalya and Indra.

 

During churning of milky ocean, AHALYA appeared as a beautiful girl.  First she looked around and found INDRA most appealing. Brahma allotted her to onlooker sage GAUTHAMA to bring up. After she has come to the age, Sage Gauthama took her to Brahma in obedience. Brahma asked him to marry Ahalya.

 

But Indra could not forget her appealing appearance. Already I have written about Indra coming in the form of sage Gauthama while sage has gone to river thinking it was early morning. Moon was Indra’s assistant  in the episode.

 

8. Renuka could not make pot to bring water.

 

RENUKA was the wife of sage Jamadagni.    Due to her Thapobalam after bath she will take clay from river bank, and make it as pot. It will dry up in seconds and she will bring water for ashram.

 

One day a Gandharva was  taking bath and one moment she looked at him. Alas. She lost concentration. On that day she could not make pot and bring water. JAMADAGNI through his jnanadrishti understood, what happened. He  asked his sons to kill Renuka. Except PARASURAMA all disobeyed, and they were cursed to death. Parasurama killed Renuka. Pleased with his son, Jamadagni asked him for any varam. He asked to revive his brothers and mother!!

 

8. Birth of Budha.

 

Once Moon God arranged a yagya. He invited all, one among them was   Guru ( Jupiter). Jupiter had three wives- Mamta, Subha and TARA. Tara was young and beautiful. She took active part in yagya even exceeding his favourite wife Rohini. In the end of Yagya, Tara was missing. Moon had kidnapped her. Ensuing long wars for years, nothing happened. Tara remained with Moon God. Finally Brahma interfered. Fearing curse, Moon returned Tara. By the time she was conceived from moon, the child born is intelligent  BUDHA (MERCURY).

 

9. Other incidents.

 

Recently after reading a posting by PRR  I could confirm I am correct- Kaikeyi was most beautiful of the queens of king Dasaratha.

 

RAVANA was forced to kidnap Seetha because of the appealing appearance of SEETHA was told to him by cousin sister SOORPHANAKA. If she would not have described her appealing beauty, some times Ravana would not have been interested in her.
