8. The power socket.
The power socket was earlier provided only in the switch box as a part of switch box having switches for fans and lights. But of late sockets are provided in the switch box for putting electrical equipments like night lamps, mosquito repellent etc. On those days we used these sockets for radio also.
Now sockets are separately provided for our computer, DVD Player, TV etc. at convenient locations extending plug points with switches. In kitchen at convenient height now plugs with switches are provided for Refrigerator, Mixi, microwave, grinder, water purifier plant, and electrical dishwasher etc. Along with switch box also some times sockets with switches are provided for extra equipments if any to be connected, at least for work men use.
The basic concept is POWER SOCKET IS TO TEMPORARILY repeat TEMPORARILY extend power supply. This mean the use of the socket is for temporary use only . IT IS NOT INTENDED FOR A PERMANENT LOAD. The equipment is temporarily connected to the socket. E.g.: - Iron box, mixi or mixer, vacuum cleaner, our computer with a plug provided in it. The equipment will be having the provision to connect to socket through plug provided with it .
8a. Specialities with socket and plug.
The power socket requires phase and neutral. Hence the neutral is extended via switch box and extended to socket. There is no terminal to connect neutral in switch box to the switch. REPEAT SWITCH PUT THROUGH ONLY PHASE.
Now a day for the power socket phase is extended first to a switch and through switch it is extended to socket box or socket unit when it is either .
Though neutral is NOT REQUIRED in a switch box having no plug, still for future requirements wire men use to extend and keep a neutral wire.
Earlier the connectors in the plug were bare, but now a day come with end insulated. This ensures, the metallic portion enters the socket, THE PORTION IF ANY VISIBLE BETWEEN THE SOCKET AND PLUG IS INSULATED giving safety from accident touching the pin.
8b. Earth lead
The earth lead is a copper metallic wire while electric wiring is done an earth is provided. Earth mean extending the current through the wire in case of problems to the ground. In visible area this will be covered. While going to the earth , a pit is taken, sawdust, charcoal etc added, the lead is connected to a spike well struck to the ground. This will provide an easy path to leakage current. You can see such a wire is taken from the main switchboard and extended to a spike somewhere outside. Periodically THE EARTH HAS TO BE CHECKED BY ELECTRICIAN for proper functioning.
This earth lead is extended to all socket points in a third connector point of the socket. The three-connector points are PHASE, NEUTRAL and the earth. The earth lead will be available in all switch boxes also, mostly not as bare wire , but insulated wire. You can see from one switch box to another earth is extended.
If any defect occurs with the equipment connected, the earth lead come to action and supply is extended to earth via the earth lead from the equipment. From the equipment there will be a connecting wire, which has three conductors, on three pins, which will exactly fit in to three holes in the sockets.
8d. Two-pin top will not go in to three pin sockets
Now a day most of the electrical equipments are with three pins. Sockets are provided to ensure the third pin earth should enter the socket hole, to open and permit the phase and neutral pins.
8e. two pin sockets and plugs.
In the two pin sockets, there is no provision for earth. Here the equipment itself will self protect with cut of switches in the case of mal functioning when connected. An example is old mixies, ironing boxes. There were cut off circuits in built. Another example is the mobile telephone chargers
8f. how to extent an equipment with two pin plug to a two-pin socket.
First of all the load should be very less like a bulb or tube light. The current carrying wire should be of quality. The bulb holder should be very good. Ensure the use is for temporary use.
8g. Power sockets with fuse.
Earlier power sockets were coming with separate switch. It was visible separately with an LED glowing . Now a day switches are coming with fuse inside and it will burst of.

While in distribution the copper wire for carrying current can be medium size of about 0.5 cm size, extending to earth pit , it should be a slightly bigger wire. Iron wire should not be used, not only for corrosion, but not a good conductor like copper. It should not be extended to the spike through pipe, it should touch the ground all the way to spike. If it is going through portico or any thing like that , it can be plastered so that human touch is not there.
