Ganesh or Ashtavinayak is one of the most widely worshipped deities in Hinduism. A patron of arts, sciences and god of creativity, intellect and wisdom, Lord Ganesh depicts and elephant head and his vehicle is a mouse. He is known as the vighna harta or the the god who removes obstacles, lord of beginnings. He is the son of Parvati and Shiva and brother of Kartikeya. According to the Shiva Purana, Ganesh had two sons, Kshema meaning prosperity and Labh meaning profit. He himself signified Buddhi, Riddhi, Siddhi i.e. wisdom, prosperity and attainment. In Maharashtra and especially in Mumbai, Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated with a lot of enthusiasm where large idols of Ganesha are worshipped and immersed into the ocean. The festival takes place early August or Late September.
